Small business owners, entrepreneurs and those who are focusing on other careers work long hours and make many sacrifices in order to become successful. While making a living doing something you love can be very gratifying, you can’t neglect the other aspects of your life. While you’re working... life is happening. Here are some tips for work/life balance.

Decide what’s important.

Take some time to figure out what you really want from life. Write down all the goals you have and all the things you want (including material and non-material things). Be specific. For instance, instead of simply writing “I want a successful career,” define what that means to you: “I will feel that I’m successful when I’ve made Partner at the law firm.” Think about work-related goals and wants, as well as relationships, personal endeavors and experiences.

Your list might include:

  • Career or business goals
  • Relationships with family members and romantic partners
  • Friendships
  • Skills
  • Travel
  • Creative endeavors
  • Relaxation activities

Don’t hold back—write down every single thing you can think of that you enjoy or want from your life.

Now, look over your list and start numbering the items in order of importance. If you have difficulty with this task, consider how you would prioritize if you were told that you had just a few years (or months) to live.

Identify potential changes to create balance.

Are you spending time on the things that you’ve identified as most important? If you’re like most people, you’re spending more time at work pursuits than in other aspects of your life.

If you’re not sure which things are getting the bulk of your attention, take a few days and write down everything you do from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep.

Now, think about potential changes you can make to focus on your priorities.

3 Tips for introducing balance

Schedule specific blocks of time during each day to devote to those important things that aren’t getting enough attention. For instance, schedule an evening walk with your spouse, or sign up for a class to learn a new skill.

Turn off your phone and computer. With mobile technology, we can literally spend every waking hour connected to social media, email and phone calls. Turn off all of your devices at a specific time every evening. You might find that this is difficult for you—our society has grown accustomed to being attached to a phone or laptop all day long. Be firm with work colleagues and yourself and just take the break you need.

Take a vacation. Many people don’t take their allotted vacation days during the year. While you might think your dedication is impressive to your boss, that may not be the case. Getting away from the office can increase your creativity and give you the rest you need to be productive and focused at work.
